ATTENTION: Anyone Who Has A Brick Wall They Can’t Seem To Break Down ~ Some Family History Isn’t Found Online…

“How To Find Your Elusive Relative – Even If You Think You Have Tried Everything…”

…And You Are Going To Love These “Smack You In The Head – Why Didn’t I Think Of That” Tips!

Dear Friend,

You don’t realize it yet, but in the next 2 minutes you will know that there is a solution to finding your family history… and you may have to go offline!

You read that right… you might have to get your hands dirty and dig up your family history from the archives that are not yet published online.

Did you know that there were thousands of books written about families and their genealogy – and yet most of them can not be accessed online?

I’ll bet you are wondering why anyone in your family would have their history published in a book.  Remember – without television, computers or radio our ancestors needed something occupy their evenings.  Our ancestors were veracious readers and they loved to read about real people.

I’ve been searching online for an elusive relative for years. I have one of those brick walls firmly planted in my office, and I try to chip away at it ever so often.

I May Have Finally Put A
Chink In My Brick Wall!

A few days ago I uncovered a priceless treasure… a book about “Hunting Down Lost Relatives“- published in 1936.  It’s a pretty big book and filled with stuff in which I had no interest at all.

BUT… after thumbing through a bit – I landed on a page that gave me an idea.  Why didn’t I think to look at old family history books?  Of course… the biggest problem is that I didn’t know where to start.  Where would I look and what am I looking for?

This old book helped me figure out where to look.  I found some books listed that are already online (huge help if you are looking for a specific name).  I wouldn’t have known where to look online (or what to look for) if I hadn’t stumbled across this old book to give me a few magic clues.

Then I hit another problem. Some of these genealogies had “charts” with letters and numbers I didn’t know how to decipher. It was like some secret code had been used, and I didn’t have the key.

Guess what? I did have the key to unlocking this Genealogy Charting Code after all.

Right inside this old book is a section teaching exactly how to decipher these old codes. Before we all started using computer software to keep track of our genealogical family lines…  our ancestors had to use paper and pencil.

These little groups of numbers or letters gave me clues to which children belonged to which family.  This is a huge help when you really don’t want to learn an entirely new “language”.

Running Down A Few New Rabbit Holes

I did start to chase down a bunch of new rabbit holes looking for my lost ancestor.  To date I still haven’t found him, but it’s only been a few days.  But NOW I have a bunch of new places to look that I didn’t even know existed.

Because this book had given me a few really good tips… I picked it back up again and flipped through a few more pages.

Again the magic happened! I found an entire section about “asking for records”.  We all know that we are looking for records…  birth-death-marriage certificates and military records being some of the most important.

We all assume that every record can be found somewhere online. At least a reference to that record will be made, and we can follow that trail to the archive and get a copy.

This is not necessarily a true statement though.

That leap of faith might land you in a big pile of nothing unless you know who and what to ask.

Plus… you need to know “How To Ask”.

Imagine that you have sent an email to some overworked clerk – asking for a marriage record.  You have waited several days – maybe even a week or more… and still no answer.

Are you frustrated? Are you just a bit miffed? Maybe you are ready to call the archive where this clerk works and give ‘em a piece of your mind.

You Should Know How To Ask For Records The Right Way

Remember that old book I was telling you about? It’s filled with tips and templates to help you get a favorable response from those overworked and underpaid clerks.

These templates can be used for email requests… but they make great “snail-mail” templates as well. Can you imagine the personal connection a clerk will feel with a physical request in his hands?

This Treasure Book Is Filled With Little Tiny Clues Hiding Around Every Page

You remember the old adage  …

“You don’t know what to look for – if you don’t know what to look for”

This statement couldn’t be truer for the genealogist. I had no idea I didn’t know what to look for until I picked up this old book.  Some of the records that I need to find might be located easily by using some of the clues from this book.

There is an amusing quote in this book about mistakes in cemetery records…   and about the use of tombstones as advertising.  This adds a bit of levity while reading through some of this archival style dialog.

I’ll Bet You Want To Know
Where To Get This Book!

I’ve gone one better… I took this big book and carved out just what you need.  You don’t really want to go through some huge book looking for the small nuggets of gold you need right now, do you?
